The temporary account reviews triggered widespread concern among users, with WhatsApp stating it continues to strengthen abuse prevention measures while working to quickly restore access when legitimate accounts are mistakenly flagged.
Several WhatsApp users, including a number in India, experienced temporary restrictions after their accounts were placed under review by the messaging platform, leaving them unable to access chats, voice calls and other services for up to 24 hours. The incident sparked widespread concern, with many users turning to social media to report unexpected account suspensions and seek clarification from the company.
The issue surfaced on Monday evening, with reports emerging around 8 p.m. IST as affected users discovered they had been locked out of their accounts. Instead of the usual interface, users were shown a notification explaining that their account was under review to verify compliance with WhatsApp's terms of service. The notice indicated that account activity and device-related information would be examined before a decision was communicated, typically within a 24-hour period.
The review message also directed users to resources explaining responsible platform usage, account security practices and guidance for recovering stolen accounts or devices. During the review period, however, users were unable to send messages, make calls or access other features of the Meta-owned communication platform.

Users voice frustration over unexpected restrictions
The sudden account reviews triggered a wave of complaints across social media platforms. Several users claimed they had received no prior warning or explanation before access to their accounts was restricted. Many stated that they had already filed appeals but were concerned about the disruption, particularly those who depend on WhatsApp for professional communication and business operations.
Some users questioned whether the restrictions were the result of a system malfunction, while others speculated that automated moderation tools may have incorrectly flagged legitimate accounts. The uncertainty surrounding the reviews led to growing demands for greater transparency regarding the criteria used to identify potentially violating accounts.
WhatsApp acknowledges possibility of errors
Responding to the reports, a WhatsApp spokesperson said the company continuously works to identify and prevent misuse of its platform by taking action against accounts that may violate its policies. The spokesperson acknowledged, however, that automated systems are not always accurate and that genuine users could occasionally be affected.
"We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting," the spokesperson said.
WhatsApp did not specify the number of accounts impacted or clarify whether the reviews were triggered by a technical glitch, automated enforcement mechanisms or a broader anti-spam initiative. It also remains unclear whether the incident affected only select regions or users across multiple markets. As the company continues to investigate, affected users are awaiting the completion of the review process and restoration of full access to their accounts.
