X rolls out rebuilt Android App with faster performance and new architecture

The redesigned Android app introduces a rebuilt software foundation aimed at improving speed, stability and responsiveness, while enabling X to accelerate future feature development and enhance the user experience across supported Android devices.

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has begun rolling out a completely rebuilt version of its Android application, marking one of the platform's most significant engineering overhauls to date. The redesigned app has been developed from the ground up with a new software architecture that the company says delivers noticeable improvements in speed, stability and overall performance.

The launch follows the company's earlier acknowledgement that its Android app had lagged behind its iOS counterpart in terms of responsiveness, reliability and feature delivery. With Android accounting for a significant share of its user base, X had identified improving the platform as a key engineering priority.

According to the company, the rebuilt application offers faster loading times, smoother scrolling, improved notifications and enhanced responsiveness across everyday interactions. X said the modernised software foundation is designed to provide a more seamless experience while simplifying future development.

"It's faster, smoother, and more reliable than the old version in every way. We modernised the foundation so everything just feels better: scrolling, loading, notifications, you name it," the company said in a post on X.

New foundation designed to speed up innovation

The Android application has been rewritten using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, replacing the previous architecture with a modern codebase intended to improve maintainability and accelerate feature development. The company believes the new framework will enable engineers to deliver updates and new capabilities more efficiently in the future.

Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, described the initiative as one of the company's largest engineering efforts. “It’s one of the largest engineering projects in the company's history,” Bier wrote on X. “It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed.”

The redevelopment follows Bier's announcement in 2025 that X was assembling an Android-focused engineering team dedicated to rebuilding the application rather than issuing incremental updates.

Global rollout begins, more features in development

While the new Android app is now being released worldwide through the Google Play Store, X said development is continuing on several features that are yet to be integrated into the rebuilt version.

Among the capabilities still under development are support for Hosting Spaces, a Video Editor, React with Video, and additional performance optimisations for older Android smartphones.

The company said the new architecture is expected to improve long-term scalability, making it easier to introduce future enhancements while maintaining a consistent and reliable experience for Android users. The rollout represents a strategic investment in narrowing the gap between the Android and iOS versions of the platform while establishing a foundation for faster innovation going forward.
