Gemini’s new AI tools enable users to add or remove objects, change backgrounds, merge images, and creatively edit features like hair colour, offering greater flexibility for personal expression, storytelling, and professional design tasks
Google is rolling out a powerful new update to its Gemini app, introducing advanced AI-powered image editing tools designed to enhance both user creativity and content personalization. The latest feature set enables users to seamlessly modify AI-generated visuals as well as their own photos with professional-level precision.
With the new tools, Gemini users will be able to add or remove objects from photos, change image backgrounds, merge images, and apply creative adjustments such as altering hair colour or facial features. These capabilities bring enhanced flexibility for personal expression, storytelling, and even professional design work.
Users can also engage Gemini for more imaginative tasks, such as generating illustrated bedtime stories or transforming photos to appear as if they were taken in exotic or fictional settings—like a tropical beach or outer space.
Watermarks for AI transparency
To ensure responsible AI use, Google is incorporating SynthID watermarks—an invisible digital signature—into all AI-edited and generated images. These watermarks help distinguish AI-created visuals from authentic ones, providing a layer of transparency and accountability. The company is also testing visible watermarks to further reinforce content identification.
David Sharon, Group Product Manager for Gemini Apps, noted that the editing system supports multi-step transformations, allowing users to make layered and realistic edits. A demonstration by Google showed a dalmatian wearing a yellow cap on grass, with the background changed to a beach—offering a clear example of the tool’s seamless editing capabilities.
The update supports 45 languages and is being launched across multiple countries, signalling Google’s commitment to making its AI tools widely accessible.
Gemini coming to iPhones
In parallel developments, Google is reportedly nearing a deal with Apple to integrate Gemini into iPhones. According to earlier comments by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the agreement could be finalized by mid-2025, potentially allowing Siri to utilize Gemini for more complex queries—similar to Apple’s recent integration of ChatGPT.
The new AI editing capabilities in Gemini not only enhance creative freedom for users but also reinforce Google’s broader push to lead in responsible AI deployment. As the technology evolves, Gemini’s tools are set to become essential for everyday content creation and professional digital storytelling.
