Mark Carney met Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, with both leaders committing to deepen economic and strategic ties between their countries.
A key outcome of the meeting was a C$2.6 billion ($1.9 billion) agreement under which Canada will supply uranium to India.
The deal is expected to support India’s growing nuclear energy programme and help expand its clean, reliable baseload power capacity.
As electricity demand rises and the country pushes to cut carbon emissions, nuclear energy is seen as an important part of India’s long-term energy mix.
Beyond energy cooperation, the two sides agreed to accelerate negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement.
Officials aim to conclude the pact by the end of the year, a move that could open new opportunities across sectors including agriculture, technology, clean energy and manufacturing.
Both countries have also set a target to raise bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, up from about $9 billion in 2024–25.
The leaders said closer trade and investment ties would strengthen economic resilience and create jobs in both economies.
