Users currently relying on encrypted chats will be prompted to save important conversations and media before the deadline, as the messaging system on the platform transitions back to its standard format.
Instagram has announced that it will discontinue support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages beginning in May 2026, marking a shift in the platform’s approach to private messaging.
The feature, which was introduced in 2022 by parent company Meta Platforms, allowed users to enable an additional layer of privacy for their conversations. End-to-end encryption ensured that messages were secured on the sender’s device and could only be read by the recipient, preventing even the platform itself from accessing the content.
According to information shared on Instagram’s support pages, encrypted chats currently active on the platform will stop functioning after May 8, 2026. Users who have enabled the feature will receive in-app notifications informing them about the upcoming change and providing instructions on how to save important messages or media before the deadline.
The company has also advised users to update the application if they are running older versions of the app, as the option to download encrypted conversations may not appear otherwise.
How encrypted chats worked
End-to-end encrypted conversations relied on a system where each device involved in a chat generated a unique encryption key. Messages were encrypted before leaving the sender’s device and could only be decoded by the recipient’s device using the correct key.
The platform also allowed users to verify the security of their conversations by comparing encryption keys with the person they were chatting with. However, Instagram noted that certain elements, such as chat themes or visual customisations, were not covered by the encryption system.
The encryption feature was originally introduced as part of Meta’s broader push to enhance private messaging across its services. Similar capabilities were also tested on Facebook Messenger as the company explored new ways to strengthen communication privacy.
What the change means for users
With the feature set to be discontinued, Instagram conversations will return to the platform’s standard messaging system. In this format, messages may be stored or processed according to the company’s policies, meaning they will no longer have the same level of privacy protection provided by end-to-end encryption.
Users who relied on the feature for sensitive conversations are being encouraged to download their chat history before the cutoff date if they wish to retain copies of their encrypted messages.
Meta has not yet indicated whether a different privacy-focused messaging feature could replace end-to-end encryption on Instagram in the future. The decision nonetheless highlights the ongoing challenges platforms face in balancing privacy, safety, and moderation requirements within digital communication services.
