Google is launching a new AI tool for its search engine, sparking a debate about the future of the internet. While Google claims this tool will rejuvenate the web, critics fear it could lead to an "apocalypse" for many websites. What's clear is that the current chapter of online history is rapidly coming to a close, giving way to what some are calling the "machine web."
For decades, the internet has operated on a simple exchange: websites allow search engines like Google to crawl their content for free, and in return, Google sends traffic to these sites, where they generate revenue through ads and sales. This arrangement has been the foundation of the web's business model, as an estimated 68% of internet activity begins on search engines, with Google holding a 90% market share.
This long-standing system is now facing a seismic shift. On May 20, 2025, at Google's annual developer conference, CEO Sundar Pichai announced the launch of a new, "end-to-end AI Search experience" called AI Mode. This new tool is a total reimagining of search, building on the company's existing AI Overviews.
Critics predict that this AI-driven approach will have dire consequences. By providing direct, AI-generated answers, Google's new tool may reduce the need for users to click through to websites. This could severely impact website traffic, potentially making it difficult for many sites to remain profitable and leading to a scarcity of quality information online.
Optimists, however, believe the new model could improve the web's business model and expand opportunities for users to find great content. Regardless of the outcome, your digital experience may never be the same.
