Apple’s leadership transition is expected to shape the direction of its services business. The incoming CEO John Ternus is signaling a stronger focus on the company’s streaming ambitions, by making Apple TV+ more competitive in a crowded market. While outgoing CEO Tim Cook is widely credited with expanding access to products like the MacBook through a broader portfolio, Ternus appears to be looking at Apple TV+ more seriously.
If reports are to be believed, internally too, Ternus is seen as someone who wants to strengthen Apple TV+ rather than scale it back. According to recent reports, Ternus is not only familiar with Apple’s streaming service but actively follows its content.
This could translate into higher investment, more frequent releases, or a broader catalogue aimed at attracting a larger subscriber base.
Apple TV+ has built a reputation for producing selective, high-quality shows and films. However, its relatively smaller library means it often trails rivals like Netflix, Disney+, and Warner Bros. Discovery in overall reach and visibility. Making the platform more competitive may require Apple to rethink its current strategy of prioritising quality over volume.
Not without challenges
One of the key challenges for Ternus will be maintaining Apple TV+’s identity while expanding its appeal. Increasing the volume of content could help the platform gain traction, but it also risks diluting the curated approach that has defined it so far.
The service has occasionally broken into mainstream rankings, but it remains a niche player compared to larger competitors. A more aggressive content pipeline or strategic partnerships could help bridge that gap, especially in markets where streaming adoption continues to grow.
