India’s cybersecurity posture continues to strengthen under the leadership of Dr. Sanjay Bahl, Director General of CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), as the nation advances its position as a global cybersecurity hub. In a recent interaction with visiting journalists from the European Union, Dr. Bahl highlighted India’s growing cybersecurity ecosystem—powered by over 400 startups and a 6.5 lakh-strong skilled workforce, contributing to a $20 billion industry.
AI: The Double-Edged Sword in Cyber Defense
Dr. Bahl emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming cybersecurity—acting as both a tool for defense and a weapon for attackers. CERT-In leverages AI-driven analytics and automation to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber incidents in real time. Its adaptive systems now anticipate threats before they occur, creating an AI-shielded digital environment while simultaneously developing counter-AI defense mechanisms.
Proactive Threat Response and Global Collaboration
As the nodal agency for cyber crisis management, CERT-In issues timely alerts, advisories, and coordinated responsesto mitigate attacks without causing unnecessary alarm. It conducts regular cyber drills, engages in vulnerability assessments, and partners globally to share intelligence.
Notably, CERT-In and France’s ANSSI jointly published a high-level report titled “Building Trust in AI Through a Cyber Risk-Based Approach.” The agency also collaborated with the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats and contributed to the WEF’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025, featuring its successful initiatives in Indian cooperative banks and citizen device protection.
Building Indigenous Strength and Global Trust
Through policy support, auditor empanelment, and training programs, CERT-In is nurturing indigenous cybersecurity innovation. Its efforts align closely with the Digital India vision, reinforcing public–private partnerships and international cooperation.
In 2024, India reported 147 ransomware incidents, but CERT-In’s real-time intelligence sharing and forensic responsesignificantly curtailed their impact. The agency’s holistic approach—melding technology, talent, and trust—positions India as a leader in global cyber defense, fostering a secure, AI-ready digital future anchored in resilience and collaboration.
