A court has strongly condemned the circulation of artificial intelligence–generated images of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, describing them as “extremely disturbing and shocking,” and has ordered their immediate deletion from online platforms. The ruling marks a significant intervention against the misuse of AI tools to create fabricated and harmful content.
The court observed that the AI-generated images were not only misleading but also violated the actor’s dignity, privacy, and personality rights. It noted that such content has the potential to cause serious reputational harm and emotional distress, while misleading the public into believing the images are real.
Emphasising the growing threat posed by deepfakes and synthetic media, the court said unchecked use of AI technology could erode trust in digital content and pose wider risks to individuals and society. It directed platforms and intermediaries to act swiftly in taking down the images and preventing their further circulation.
Legal experts view the order as an important precedent in India’s evolving jurisprudence on AI misuse and digital rights. The case highlights the urgent need for stronger safeguards, accountability mechanisms, and clearer regulations to address deepfake abuse.
The ruling also sends a strong message that technological innovation cannot come at the cost of personal dignity. As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, courts are increasingly stepping in to protect individuals from its darker consequences.
