Mistral AI Raises €3 Billion

French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in Series D funding, reaching a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. The deal represents the largest equity fundraising round completed by a European technology company, just three years after Mistral’s launch.

The round was led by Samsung Electronics, with Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity acting as co-leads. The investment demonstrates growing global confidence in Europe’s ability to develop competitive frontier AI companies.

Founded by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta AI, Mistral has positioned itself as a European alternative to leading U.S. AI companies, combining advanced foundation models with greater emphasis on deployment flexibility and technological sovereignty.

Its enterprise footprint is expanding rapidly. Mistral now operates across 20 countries and says it supports more than 125 global enterprises, including major financial institutions such as HSBC, ABN AMRO and BNP Paribas.

A key differentiator is Mistral’s ability to support controlled and on-premises AI deployments. For banks, governments and other highly regulated organizations, keeping sensitive information within controlled infrastructure can address requirements around privacy, security, data sovereignty and regulatory compliance.

The investor list also reflects AI’s strategic importance. New participants include Advent, BlackRock-managed funds and Luxembourg, while existing investors including NVIDIA, ASML, Salesforce Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and Bpifrance participated.

The bigger story goes beyond Mistral’s valuation. Europe has been searching for greater independence in critical AI infrastructure while competing with American and Chinese technology giants. Mistral’s massive fundraise provides capital to scale models, infrastructure and global operations. The AI race is increasingly becoming a sovereignty race—and Mistral is emerging as one of Europe’s strongest contenders for technological independence.
