India’s AI story is moving beyond software services toward building its own foundational AI infrastructure. The video highlights this shift through NVIDIA’s strategic backing of Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, one of India’s most ambitious sovereign AI companies.
Sarvam secured a $75 million extension to its Series B financing, with NVIDIA joining as a strategic investor. This followed a $234 million first close led by HCLTech and Bessemer Venture Partners, alongside Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners, valuing Sarvam at about $1.5 billion post-money.
The significance extends beyond funding. Sarvam is building a full-stack sovereign AI ecosystem spanning compute infrastructure, foundation models, inference and enterprise applications. Its objective is to create AI designed specifically for India’s languages, voices, documents and population-scale requirements.
NVIDIA brings the critical computing layer. Sarvam has used NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Quantum InfiniBand, NeMo, Nemotron and other technologies to build and deploy Indian-language models. NVIDIA says Sarvam has achieved near-linear scaling across 4,096+ H100 GPUs, while dramatically reducing production deployment time.
The partnership demonstrates why sovereign AI is becoming strategically important. Countries increasingly want critical AI models, data and infrastructure to operate within their own regulatory and technological ecosystems rather than becoming completely dependent on foreign foundation models.
Sarvam’s opportunity also extends from government to enterprise AI. Its technology is being applied to multilingual voice services, KYC, customer support and enterprise automation, while future development targets agentic AI, coding and cybersecurity.
The larger message is significant for India’s technology industry: India is progressing from consuming global AI to building AI infrastructure of its own. NVIDIA’s investment provides not only capital but also validation of India’s ability to develop population-scale AI. If this momentum continues, sovereign AI could become India’s next major technology platform—much as Aadhaar and UPI transformed digital identity and payments.
