OpenAI plans to consolidate its core products—including ChatGPT, its Codex coding platform and a browser—into a single desktop “superapp,” as it looks to simplify its product ecosystem and compete more effectively in the AI market.
The company confirmed the move following reports that internal fragmentation across multiple applications had slowed development and affected product quality.
Greg Brockman will temporarily oversee the product overhaul, while Fidji Simo will lead sales efforts as the company prepares to bring the unified platform to market.
The new approach is aimed at streamlining user experience by bringing multiple AI tools under one interface, allowing users to access conversational AI, coding capabilities and browsing functions without switching between separate applications.
Executives said the decision reflects a need to focus resources and improve execution as competition intensifies, particularly from rivals such as Anthropic.
OpenAI has been expanding its presence in the AI coding space, including launching a standalone desktop version of its Codex tool earlier this year.
The planned “superapp” signals a broader shift toward integrated AI platforms that combine multiple capabilities—such as chat, development tools and web interaction—into a unified environment.
The move comes as AI companies race to build more comprehensive ecosystems, aiming to increase user engagement and establish their platforms as central hubs for both personal and enterprise use.
