As part of a broader infrastructure upgrade, Ericsson replaced Vi’s legacy 2G and 4G equipment with modern Massive MIMO radios—AIR 3268 and AIR 3255—without any service disruption.
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has officially rolled out its 5G network in Delhi NCR, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital transformation journey. This deployment leverages Ericsson’s advanced radio solutions, a key part of Vi’s ongoing network modernization strategy to enhance mobile broadband experiences and meet growing data demands.

The 5G rollout is driven by Ericsson’s Massive MIMO radio units, specifically the AIR 3268 and AIR 3255 models, which offer higher spectrum efficiency and improved energy performance. These state-of-the-art radios have replaced Vi’s older 2G and 4G infrastructure seamlessly, ensuring zero disruption to existing network services.

The Delhi NCR launch is part of a broader partnership between Vi and Ericsson, announced in October 2024, aimed at upgrading Vi’s 4G network and introducing 5G technology across strategic Indian regions—including Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. Ericsson’s scalable, energy-efficient equipment is expected to support Vi’s ambition to deliver ultra-fast internet speeds, low latency, and next-gen digital services to consumers and enterprises alike.
Vi’s 5G rollout in 17 circles is a part of its ₹55,000 crore capex planned over three years. Cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru are next on the map, with rollouts underway across other key markets in the remaining circles. In Mumbai, 70% of eligible users are already experiencing Vi’s 5G services and about 20% of its data traffic is already being carried on the 5G network.
Focus on Sustainability and Performance
Ericsson’s Massive MIMO radios are designed to reduce network power consumption, aligning with Vi’s sustainability goals and operational efficiency targets. These innovations will help the telecom operator manage spectrum resources more effectively while laying the groundwork for future 5G use cases like smart cities, cloud gaming, augmented reality (AR), and industrial IoT applications.
As Vi joins the 5G race with rivals like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, its focus on upgrading infrastructure with future-proof technologies reflects a renewed push to regain market competitiveness. With 5G adoption on the rise and India emerging as a major digital economy, Vi’s strategic investments in network modernization are essential to expanding its user base and offering enhanced mobile experiences.
