Accenture has agreed to acquire IBM's majority stake in the technology joint venture that manages a significant portion of UniCredit's IT infrastructure, marking a strategic step in the European bank's digital transformation journey.
The joint venture was originally established in 2013 as part of a long-term outsourcing agreement between UniCredit and IBM to operate the bank's core technology infrastructure. Under the new arrangement, Accenture will assume responsibility for the venture, helping UniCredit modernize its technology landscape while giving the bank greater control over its future digital strategy.
The transition is expected to accelerate UniCredit's adoption of cloud computing, data platforms, and artificial intelligence, enabling the bank to modernize operations, improve customer experiences, and scale AI-driven innovation more effectively.
Although Accenture will take over the joint venture, IBM will remain a key technology partner, continuing to provide IBM Z mainframe systems, enterprise software, and consulting services that support the bank's mission-critical operations.
Ali Khan, Group Digital & Information Officer at UniCredit, described the partnership as a significant milestone in building the bank's next-generation technology platform. He said the collaboration with Accenture and IBM will combine the resilience expected from a leading financial institution with the agility needed to innovate faster and responsibly scale AI across the organization.
The move reflects a broader trend across the banking industry, where financial institutions are restructuring long-standing technology partnerships to gain greater flexibility, strengthen cloud capabilities, and accelerate AI adoption while maintaining the stability of critical banking systems.
