Mukesh Ambani’s elder son will succeed him as the Chairman of the conglomerate's telecom unit Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Akash Ambani was appointed the Chairman as Mukesh Ambani resigned from the board.
Mukesh Ambani will continue to be the Chairman of Jio Platforms Ltd., the flagship company that owns all Jio digital services brands including Reliance Jio Infocomm. Akash was part of teams that negotiated Meta Platforms Inc.’s investment into Jio’s parent, besides leading other key acquisitions.
Mukesh Ambani will remain involved in overseeing the digital businesses. He is the Chairman of Jio Platforms, the flagship company that owns all of Jio’s digital service brands, including RJIL. Facebook and Google, private equity firms, and sovereign wealth funds who pumped in over Rs 1.5 trillion in the company in 2020 are also shareholders in Jio Platforms, in which Reliance Industries (RIL) has a majority stake.
Akash is an economics graduate from Brown University in the US, and has been involved with Jio since its inception. He is also a board member of Jio Platforms. Akash has been heavily involved in the development of the digital environment surrounding Jio's 4G offering.
He worked closely with a team of engineers to develop and launch an India-specified Jiophone in 2017. Akash is expected to continue to operate on the cutting-edges of innovation and technology to encourage an ecosystem that will further digital solutions and make the power of data and technology more accessible to all, including those who are still on the margin.
