AMD, in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has introduced two cutting-edge supercomputers, “Arka” and “Arunika.” Named for their connection to the Sun, these high-performance clusters were inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
Ranked among the top three supercomputers in India, Arka and Arunika are the nation’s most powerful CPU-based systems, standing out as the Number 1 CPU-only supercomputers in the country. Unlike other systems that rely on GPUs for performance boosts, these clusters are driven entirely by CPU compute.
The Arka cluster, based at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, boasts a capacity of 11.77 PetaFLOPS powered by 3,021 compute nodes, each featuring two AMD EPYC™ 7643 processors with 48 cores. Arka will support meteorological research and enhance the accuracy and prediction lead times for phenomena such as tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, and heatwaves.
The Arunika cluster, located at the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida, focuses on production forecasting with 8.24 PetaFLOPS of capacity across 2,115 compute nodes. This system will aid in marine ecosystem studies and help build integrated models for disaster management.
“AMD has long been committed to using technology to address global challenges like climate change. Our AMD EPYC™ processors power some of the world’s most energy-efficient, high-performance supercomputers,” said Jaya Jagadish, Country Head and SVP of Silicon Design Engineering, AMD India. “We are honored to partner with MoES in building the Arka and Arunika clusters, advancing India’s research capabilities and strengthening climate resilience.”
“These high-performance computing clusters will significantly enhance weather prediction and support critical research into climate change and disaster management,” added Vinay Sinha, MD Sales, AMD India. “We are proud to enable this capability with our AMD EPYC™ processors.”
