Apple developing AI-powered watches with built-in cameras

The iPhone-maker aims to reduce reliance on external AI services like OpenAI and Google by integrating AI hardware into its flagship devices, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, with a focus on developing its proprietary AI tools like Visual Intelligence

Apple is reportedly working on a pioneering new version of the Apple Watch, which could include a built-in camera, as part of its broader efforts to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) more extensively across its product lineup. The upcoming Apple Watch, expected to launch in 2027, could feature Apple Watch camera integration, marking a significant leap in smartwatch capabilities.

According to Mark Gurman’s latest newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple is actively exploring ways to embed cameras in both its standard Series models and the more rugged Ultra line of the Apple Watch. For the standard Series, the camera may be incorporated into the Apple Watch display camera, similar to how the front-facing camera is designed on iPhones. This would provide a sleek, seamless look while still offering the necessary functionality. On the other hand, for the Apple Watch Ultra, which has a different design and thickness compared to the Series models, Apple is said to be testing a camera placement near the digital crown and side button. This location would provide more space and could make it easier for users to aim the watch for object scanning or other features.

The integration of cameras would complement the company’s push to enhance its Apple Watch AI features. In October 2023, the iPhone-maker launched Apple Intelligence as part of iOS 18.1, which includes tools like Visual Intelligence. These features allow devices to use their cameras to identify objects and landmarks in the environment, offering users contextually relevant information. With the potential addition of cameras in the Apple Watch, Apple could significantly expand the functionality of these AI tools, enabling users to interact with their surroundings in new and innovative ways. This development could pave the way for a more immersive AI-powered Apple Watch that seamlessly integrates AI capabilities into daily life.

Apple’s ambitious vision for AI-powered wearables

Though Apple has not officially confirmed or commented on the developments, the possibility of a camera-equipped Apple Watch is not entirely new. In fact, rumours about an Apple Watch with a built-in camera have circulated since 2015. At that time, reports suggested that the second-generation Apple Watch might feature a FaceTime camera located on the top bezel. However, these early rumours did not come to fruition. Now, with advancements in AI and camera technology, the latest reports align more closely with these earlier speculations, indicating that Apple could finally be close to realizing this vision.

In addition to the Apple Watch, Apple is also reportedly working to expand its AI ecosystem across other devices. Gurman previously reported in December that Apple is developing AirPods with infrared cameras, which are expected to launch by 2026. These sensors could enable features like hand gesture recognition and environmental awareness, particularly when used in tandem with other devices such as the Apple Vision Pro headset. These moves are part of Apple’s broader ambition to create wearable AI devices that interact seamlessly with each other, enhancing user experience.

Apple’s push to bring AI hardware to its flagship devices, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, is part of a larger strategy to reduce its reliance on external AI services, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s AI models. Instead, Apple is focused on building its own proprietary AI tools, with Visual Intelligence being a central part of this plan. By embedding these advanced AI features into its wearable devices, Apple aims to create a more integrated, seamless experience for users across its product range.

However, much of Apple’s success in executing this plan depends on the ongoing development of its AI division, which is currently undergoing internal restructuring following a recent leadership shake-up. If all goes as planned, the much-anticipated Apple Watch 2025 with a built-in camera, alongside other AI-powered devices like the AirPods, could be ready for launch by 2027, marking a new chapter in Apple Watch future features and wearable technology innovation.
