Apple intends to use the Action Button in place of the mute switch on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. There are rumours that this customizable button will be a part of the complete iPhone 16 series, which is expected to ship in late 2024. According to sources, it will have capacitive type functionality and be styled similarly to the home button of the iPhone SE (2022).
Upon unveiling the iPhone 14 in 2022, Apple had a delightful surprise for those opting for the pricier iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models: the Dynamic Island. This feature replaced the once-dreaded notch with a cutout display, quickly gaining popularity among users.
The Action button has proven to be a success among users of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It has replaced the dedicated mute switch, offering users the ability to customize its functions, such as launching the camera app, toggling the flashlight, recording a voice memo, and more.
The Action button on the upcoming iPhone 16 series is expected to be a "capacitive-type button" rather than a mechanical one. This implies that it will respond to pressure without the need for physical movement.
However, it should be noted that everything is in the pre-production stage right now, so things can change. However, based on how iPhone launches have gone in recent years, it does make sense that Apple would roll out the latest premium-only feature — in this case, the Action button — on the base models for the next generation of iPhones next year.
