Since the starting of December 1, state-owned telecom company BSNL is not able to provide new or duplicate SIM cards. This has affected the company as it is not able to add new customers. The problem is not restricted to one state but persists across the country. The core reason for the problem is a major outage of BSNL’s Sanchar Aadhaar app which is preventing people from activating their SIM cards or completing their KYC (Know Your Customer) registrations.
As per a report, several people are visiting BSNL exchanges and customer care centers for new SIM cards. Users, who have lost their phones or damaged SIM cards, are also facing the same issue. They say the SIM issuing app is down, due to which BSNL employees are unable to help customers.
Notably, the state-owned company uses an app named, “Sanchar Aadhaar” to issue SIM cards. The contracts to use this app are renewed annually and the company receives monthly payments. However, for the past four months, BSNL has not made any payment to the company, resulting in a backlog of millions of rupees.
When the contract ended on November 30th, the company shut down the Sanchar Aadhaar app from midnight.
