It is conducting two market studies on competition issues in relation to AI and renewable energy space across BRICS nations.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is intensifying its efforts to promote fair competition and curb anti-competitive practices, especially in the context of the rapidly transforming digital economy. Tasked with fostering a level playing field in India’s dynamic markets, the CCI is navigating the intricate balance between traditional market structures and the disruptive forces of digital innovation.
In recent years, the digital economy has presented unprecedented challenges for regulatory authorities worldwide. With the rise of e-commerce platforms, digital payment ecosystems, and online marketplaces, traditional market practices are being reshaped at an accelerated pace. The CCI has recognized the need to evolve its enforcement mechanisms to address these complexities effectively.
CCI Chairperson Ravneet Kaur recently outlined the Commission's commitment to addressing the challenges arising from the convergence of traditional markets and the rapidly evolving digital economy. She emphasized adopting a proactive regulatory approach that not only tackles the complexities of technology-driven sectors but also ensures a balance between effective oversight and a market-friendly environment. To strengthen its capabilities, the CCI plans to leverage collaborations, integrate advanced technologies, and onboard domain experts specializing in areas such as AI, data analytics, and digital markets.
The regulator is also conducting two market studies to study competition issues in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Renewable Energy Space across BRICS countries. Key areas of focus include monitoring potential monopolistic behavior, such as the abuse of dominant market positions by large digital players, and ensuring fair practices in data collection and usage. With increasing instances of predatory pricing, algorithmic collusion, and gatekeeping by tech giants, the CCI is working to identify and address loopholes in existing competition laws.
To this end, the Commission is leveraging technology and global best practices to refine its investigative frameworks. Collaborative efforts with international competition bodies have also been initiated to share insights and strategies for tackling cross-border digital market challenges.
Simultaneously, the CCI aims to foster a pro-innovation environment by engaging with stakeholders, including startups, small businesses, and consumer advocacy groups. By balancing enforcement with facilitation, the Commission seeks to ensure that India’s markets remain competitive, inclusive, and conducive to innovation. As the digital economy continues to grow, the CCI’s role in safeguarding fair competition will be pivotal in shaping India’s market landscape for the future.
