Anthropic has launched in-country inference for Claude in India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests to be processed within the country. The capability targets banks, government organisations and large enterprises that require stronger data-residency assurances before deploying generative AI across sensitive workloads.
The service covers Claude models including Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. For regulated organisations, local processing addresses an important barrier to AI adoption: keeping sensitive workloads within Indian borders while maintaining enterprise-grade access controls and audit trails.
According to Anthropic, India is already one of Claude’s largest markets. The company says demand for local inference has been particularly strong among financial institutions, government bodies and enterprises operating under strict regulatory and data-handling requirements.
Early customers and partners include Reliance, CRED, TCS, Kotak Bank, Mahindra Group, NPCI and Godrej Industries. Their feedback highlights regulatory alignment, lower latency, resilience and data governance as important advantages of processing Claude requests locally.
The development is particularly significant for BFSI and agentic AI. NPCI is building its AiNxt agentic AI platform with Claude, while Indian banks are using the technology for engineering and employee productivity. As AI agents gain greater enterprise access, governance and security become increasingly critical.
Anthropic’s move also strengthens its broader India strategy following the opening of its Bengaluru office. More importantly, it reflects a fundamental shift in enterprise AI: performance alone is no longer enough. Data sovereignty, privacy, governance, security and regulatory compliance are becoming decisive factors determining whether AI moves from experimentation into mission-critical production.
