One of the top two high- profile IT expositions in the world, Computex Taipei 2007 was concluded with much fanfare. Organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), the exposition started with the official address of the Deputy Chairman of TAITRA, Mr. Gary Tseng, who inaugurated the show. He said, “Many IT companies choose this trade show to display their latest technology and products and to better diversify business meetings this year, we have made some special arrangements, such as the Buyers’ Night Banquet, for local and overseas manufacturers and buyers to network.”Â
Â
Mr. Albert Chen, Managing Director of TCA, also expressed his high appreciation of this year’s Computex. “I believe that a common telecommunications term, 3G, applies to this year’s Computex Taipei. The three Gs are Good Products, Good Prices and a Good Platform. Computex Taipei brings together Taiwanese manufacturers that offer international buyers one-stop shopping at competitive prices with good partnership opportunities.” Taipei’s Deputy Mayor, Mr. Chung-Yih Lin, also mentioned the benefits that Computex brings to the nation. “Computex Taipei not only brings business opportunities to Taiwan, but also distinguished guests,” he noted. “Next year, the new convention site in the Nangang area is expected to give manufacturers more space to display their efforts.”Â
Â
After these remarks, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Mr. Fadah Hsieh, also announced the Taiwanese Government’s expectations from Taiwan’s IT industry. “Taiwan started its ICT business in the OEM format and is gradually transforming itself into an ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) specialist. Our next goal is to move upward to OBM (Own Brand Manufacturing),” he noted. “Building upon the advantages of Taiwan’s leading position in ICT industries, the government has reached out to support and emphasize design and application. With global competitiveness becoming more severe, the government should team up with the private sector to create synergy and make Taiwan a global ICT R&D hub.” Â
Â
Almost 1,333 representatives from various cross-sections of industries and media participated in the show. The four spacious Taipei World Trade Center halls housed nearly 2,926 booths and over 30,000 overseas buyers attended the show. The organizers expected a turnout of more than 130,000 IT professionals, along with 30,000 from overseas. Near about US$13 billion worth of business including sales and order placement was done.

For the convenience of buyers and visitors and in order to provide them the hospitality eye-catching, welcome banners were visible along the hallways of both terminals of Taoyuan International Airport, and a specially arranged Computex Taipei airport service desk was set up to assist buyers. In addition, a fleet of free Computex Taipei shuttle buses were deployed from the airport to major hotels.Â
Â
Even at the venue, there were hundreds of PCs to fulfil the registration process easily and quickly. Meanwhile, buyer lounges and business centres were ready to serve throughout each venue with such services as photocopiers, faxes, mobile phone re-chargers, and use of free Internet.Â
Â
Even the Press centre at the venue was well equipped with a sufficient number of PCs and laptops to cater to the visiting journalists and reporters.
Â
What actually surprised me was the willingness and cooperation of the local government to make this happen swiftly. The Mayor of the city of Taipei had given all visiting professionals a free bus pass to visit Taipei city for one day and every day there were free bus service from major hotels to pick up and drop at the Computex Venue and vice versa.Â

It was surprising that even though it rained every day, the spirit of the visitors at Computex 2007 was not dampened. Some said it was the wettest IT event in the history of Computex Taipei.Â
Â
With 27 years of experience, Computex Taipei is already the first choice procurement platform for both foreign and local buyers. The Computex Taipei period in Taiwan is known as the “Annual Golden Week” for the domestic ICT industry. That is because the ICT industry, coupled with the electronics sector, comprises the chief part of the Taiwan economy and plays a vital role in global production.Â
