Delhi HC Orders To Block Websites Copying RummyCircle
In a statement following the verdict, Games24x7 expressed gratitude to the Delhi High Court for recognizing the gravity of the situation.

The Delhi High Court has issued a John Doe order against multiple websites accused of illegally copying the design and content of RummyCircle, the online gaming platform operated by Games24x7. The order came on Games24x7’s lawsuit to address multiple violations, including copyright, trademark infringement, misrepresentation, and the unauthorised use of the names of the startup’s founders on certain websites.

In the plea, Games24X7 said that certain websites were employing the bait-and-switch tactic. It alleged that several websites were replicating their platform's layout, design, and user interface. These clones not only mislead users but also damage the brand’s reputation and undermine its investment in technology and user experience. The petition highlighted that these websites not only violated intellectual property rights but also exploited the goodwill and trust that RummyCircle has built over the years. Games24x7 argued that such actions caused financial and reputational harm while also confusing genuine users.

After reviewing the evidence presented, the Delhi High Court acknowledged the merit of Games24x7’s claims. The court observed that the websites in question had blatantly copied elements of RummyCircle, including its interface, color schemes, and marketing strategies, which amounted to clear copyright and trademark violations.

Notably, a John Doe order is a legal order which enables a person or organisation to take action against an unidentified individual or group. The term “John Doe” is used as a placeholder for the unknown party accused of wrongdoing. In its ruling, the court ordered ISPs to block access to these infringing websites to prevent further misuse. Additionally, search engines were directed to delist these websites from search results. The court emphasized the need to protect intellectual property rights in the digital era, where replication of content and platforms can occur rapidly.

The decision sets a precedent for intellectual property protection in the online gaming industry, which has been witnessing rapid growth in India. It reinforces the importance of safeguarding proprietary content and innovation, encouraging legitimate operators to invest in enhancing user experience without the fear of being imitated.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, fair, and innovative gaming experience for its users and warned that it would take stringent legal action against any future infringements.
