Elon Musk has announced the launch of Grokipedia, which is set to become a competitor to Wikipedia. Musk announced this on his X social media page. Grokipedia was developed by the company xAI and it operates on artificial intelligence. Launched as a ‘non-woke’ alternative to Wikipedia, it went live on Monday, with its creator claiming the new site is already better than the world’s free online encyclopedia.
“Grokipedia.com version 0.1 is now live. Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo," Musk said in his X post.
As of now, Grokipedia has 885,279 articles. He also posted several messages on X, where users conducted a comparative analysis of articles on the same topic and uncovered inconsistencies. Some entries on Grokipedia appear to have been lifted directly from Wikipedia. A few pages, such as the one on the Nobel Prize in Physics, carry a disclaimer at the bottom saying, “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution - ShareAlike 4.0 License." But the note doesn’t appear on all entries.
Musk announced this platform on October 6. He explained then that the project, built on Grok artificial intelligence, is set to be “a massive improvement to Wikipedia.” The web resource will analyze open sources, identify errors, partial truths or missing context, and automatically correct inaccuracies in the articles.
According to Musk, Grokipedia aims to bolster the accuracy of information and improve the ease of verifying data. The platform is being developed in the context of growing competition among online encyclopedias and the use of artificial intelligence in publications.
