The update brings advanced AI assistance directly into the browsing experience, enabling users to summarise content, compare information across tabs, generate images, and interact with Google services more seamlessly while navigating the web.
Google has begun expanding its artificial intelligence assistant Gemini directly within the Google Chrome browser to more international users. The company confirmed that the feature, which was initially launched in the United States last year, is now being introduced to Chrome users in India, Canada and New Zealand.
The rollout marks another step in Google’s strategy to integrate generative AI more deeply into everyday digital tools. With this update, the assistant will support more than 50 languages globally. In India, the feature will be available in several regional languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil, enabling a broader group of users to interact with the AI in their preferred language.
The Gemini assistant in Chrome is powered by Google’s Gemini 3.1 model and will be accessible on multiple platforms including Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus devices. The feature will also be available to iOS users accessing the Chrome browser.
AI assistant integrated into the browser
Unlike traditional browser extensions, Gemini will be directly embedded within Chrome’s interface. Users can activate the assistant by selecting the Gemini icon located in the browser’s toolbar, which opens a side-panel chat interface.
Through this interface, the AI assistant can help summarise long articles, answer questions related to web content, and recall previously visited pages to assist users in their research or browsing tasks. The assistant is also designed to function across several open tabs simultaneously, allowing users to analyse information from different websites in a single conversation.
For example, users can ask Gemini to compare products from different online stores or compile information from multiple sources without manually switching between tabs.
Deeper integration with Google services
The assistant is also connected to several Google services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar, and YouTube. This integration allows users to perform tasks such as scheduling meetings, checking location details, or asking questions about video content directly from the browser.
In addition to browsing assistance, Chrome users will also be able to generate images through a built-in creative tool called Nano Banana 2. The feature works through the Gemini sidebar, allowing users to create images without opening separate applications or tabs.
With the latest update, Google aims to transform the browser into a more intelligent workspace where AI can assist with information discovery, productivity tasks, and creative activities, all within a single interface.
