Google CEO praises DeepSeek for disrupting AI industry

Sundar Pichai highlighted that this breakthrough marks a new era of AI, where innovation is driven by fierce competition and cross-border collaboration, with companies from various regions and markets making significant contributions

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed his admiration for DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup that has made a significant impact on the artificial intelligence industry by developing a cutting-edge AI model at a fraction of the typical cost. Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Pichai noted that DeepSeek managed to create an AI model for under $6 million, far less than the $100 million typically required for such advanced technology.

Pichai comments on global AI competition

Pichai comments highlighted that DeepSeek's rapid ascent, including topping both the Apple App Store and Google Play charts last month, signals the growing competitive nature of global AI development. "What DeepSeek has done is remarkable," Pichai said. "It shows just how widespread and competitive the AI landscape has become globally." He emphasized that this breakthrough reflects a new era where AI innovation is no longer limited to a few dominant players but is a fiercely competitive, cross-border tech collaboration, with companies from different regions and markets making their mark.

One of the most impressive aspects of DeepSeek's achievement is its ability to deliver powerful AI capabilities while using minimal computational resources. The startup employed only 2,000 AI chips to train its model, a striking contrast to the more than 16,000 chips used by companies like Meta for similar projects. This efficient use of hardware translates directly into cost savings, an increasingly important factor in AI development. For context, Google itself reportedly spent $2–3 billion last year to produce a million custom AI chips, while Amazon invested $200 million in building 100,000 AI chips.

Beyond its affordability and efficiency, DeepSeek’s AI is also open-source, allowing developers worldwide to access and build upon its technology. This open model has generated significant excitement within the AI community. Pichai pointed out that DeepSeek’s approach to both efficiency and openness was a key factor in its growing recognition. DeepSeek recognition for its innovation underscores the importance of both efficiency and transparency in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape. As the competition intensifies, Chinese startups like DeepSeek are playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

Google’s commitment to AI efficiency

In response to this shift towards more efficient AI, Google recently launched its own cost-effective model, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, which Pichai described as the company's "most cost-efficient model yet." While Google did not reveal exact production costs, the launch signals the tech giant’s commitment to keeping pace with the rapid evolution of the AI sector, where innovation and efficiency have become paramount. This move also reflects Google’s recognition of the need to balance performance with cost-effectiveness, much like its cross-border counterparts in the global AI race.

Pichai’s remarks underscore a pivotal moment in the world of artificial intelligence: one where efficiency, innovation, and open access are becoming key drivers of success. This shift is pushing both Chinese startups like DeepSeek and global tech giants to rethink traditional models and embrace more sustainable, cost-effective practices, ensuring the next wave of AI is built on accessibility and global collaboration.
