The new iOS app enables real-time speech transcription and automatic text refinement without internet access, offering multiple formatting options and personalised outputs while strengthening Google’s push into privacy-focused, on-device artificial intelligence solutions.
Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence application that can transcribe spoken words and automatically refine them into polished text, all without requiring an internet connection. The app, called AI Edge Eloquent, is currently available for iOS users, with Android availability expected in the future.
The launch highlights Google’s growing focus on on-device AI, allowing users to process speech data locally on their smartphones rather than relying on cloud-based systems. This ensures improved privacy, as audio recordings and transcripts remain on the device unless users choose to enable optional cloud features.
Smart transcription with built-in editing
AI Edge Eloquent is designed to go beyond basic speech-to-text functionality. It not only converts spoken input into text but also removes filler words such as “uh” and “um,” producing cleaner and more readable outputs. This makes it particularly useful for professionals, students, and content creators who require structured documentation from spoken input.
The app also allows users to customise how their speech is presented. Outputs can be formatted into summaries, detailed transcripts, or more formal write-ups, depending on the intended use. While the core experience is fully offline, users have the option to enhance results using cloud-based processing powered by Google’s broader AI ecosystem.
Another notable feature is its ability to learn user preferences over time. By adapting to frequently used words, phrases, and names, the app aims to deliver increasingly accurate and context-aware transcriptions. Additional tools such as word count tracking and searchable recording history further enhance usability.
Expanding Google’s on-device AI strategy
The introduction of AI Edge Eloquent adds to Google’s expanding suite of AI offerings, including platforms like NotebookLM, Workspace AI, and Vertex AI. However, this app stands out for its offline-first approach, reflecting a shift towards faster, more private AI experiences that do not depend on continuous connectivity.
The move also positions Google in the emerging market for offline AI applications, where competition is intensifying with tools such as Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper. As users increasingly prioritise speed, privacy, and control over their data, on-device AI solutions are gaining traction.
With AI Edge Eloquent, Google is aiming to simplify how spoken content is captured and refined, offering a practical tool for everyday communication and productivity while reinforcing its broader push into next-generation AI experiences.
