Google has announced that it is testing a new conversational AI feature for YouTube on TV, adding enhanced functionality for users who access the microphone option on supported remotes. The experimental feature introduces an “Ask” button that appears beneath videos, enabling viewers to interact through voice commands. For now, the trial is limited to a small group of users.
While the capability itself is not entirely new — it was first introduced for smartphone and desktop users in November last year — TV audiences were not part of the initial rollout. Google is now expanding the experiment to larger screens to evaluate how it performs in a living room environment.
According to YouTube, the aim is to make video viewing more interactive. Instead of pausing content to search for information elsewhere, users can ask questions directly on the same screen. Whether they want clarification, deeper insight into a topic, or recommendations for related content, the feature is designed to respond without interrupting playback.
The system is powered by Google’s Gemini models, which draw on information from YouTube and other online sources to generate context-aware responses. The objective is to deliver clearer explanations and enable exploration of related subjects without requiring users to switch apps or devices.
