The gaming publisher has apologised to players after criticism over an in-game item introduced in PUBG Mobile’s latest update, promising stricter content reviews to ensure cultural and religious sensitivity across its global player community.
South Korean gaming publisher Krafton has issued a public apology and removed a recently introduced item from PUBG Mobile after backlash from players who raised concerns over its religious sensitivity.
The controversy emerged after the launch of the game’s 4.4 update, which included an item called the “Hand of the Almighty” card. Several members of the Muslim gaming community objected to the use of the phrase, arguing that religious references should not be used in promotional or gaming-related content.
As criticism spread across social media and gaming forums, many players called on the publisher to take immediate corrective action. In response, Krafton confirmed that the item had been removed from the game and acknowledged the concerns raised by users.
In its official statement, the company apologised to players and said it deeply valued community feedback. Krafton also reiterated its commitment to respecting the beliefs, traditions, and practices of players from different cultural and religious backgrounds.
Krafton promises stronger content review measures
Following the incident, Krafton stated that it would strengthen its internal content vetting systems to avoid similar controversies in future updates. The company said it aims to create a safe and inclusive gaming environment for its global audience.
The publisher further noted that game content would undergo more careful evaluation to ensure it remains sensitive to diverse religions, cultures, and communities. Industry observers say such measures are becoming increasingly important as online games continue to attract millions of players from different regions and belief systems worldwide.
PUBG Mobile remains one of the most widely played multiplayer mobile games globally, with a large user base across Asia and the Middle East. Experts believe global gaming companies now face growing pressure to carefully assess cultural references before introducing new in-game content.
Gaming industry has faced similar incidents before
The latest controversy is not the first time a video game developer has faced criticism over unintended religious references. In earlier instances, developers of Call of Duty faced backlash after pages resembling verses from the Quran appeared in one of the game’s zombie maps. The content was later removed following complaints from players.
Gaming analysts note that with international audiences becoming more diverse and socially aware, publishers are expected to maintain higher standards of cultural sensitivity and content moderation.
The PUBG Mobile incident has once again highlighted the challenges global gaming companies face in balancing creative content with cultural awareness in an increasingly connected digital entertainment industry.
