The proposed projects, expected to generate 25,400 MW of nuclear power and create large-scale employment, mark one of Maharashtra’s biggest clean energy investment initiatives following India’s decision to open the nuclear sector to private participation.
The Maharashtra government has signed a series of agreements with leading energy and industrial companies to develop nuclear power projects worth an estimated ₹6.5 lakh crore. The proposed projects are expected to generate a combined capacity of 25,400 megawatts and significantly strengthen the state’s clean energy infrastructure.
According to officials, memorandums of understanding were signed with Adani Power Limited, Reliance Industries Limited, NTPC Limited and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited, part of the Bajaj Group.
Most of the proposed projects are planned in the Konkan region, particularly in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Officials said feasibility studies and technical assessments will be conducted before final project locations and capacities are confirmed.
The development comes after the Centre opened India’s civil nuclear energy sector to private investment through the SHANTI Act passed in late 2025, ending decades of exclusive government control over nuclear power generation.
Major investments planned across Konkan region
Among the proposed projects, Adani Power has announced plans to invest ₹1.5 lakh crore for a 6,000 MW nuclear power project proposed at Barsu in Ratnagiri district. The location has previously witnessed protests linked to a proposed oil refinery project, with local groups raising environmental and land acquisition concerns.
Reliance Industries has proposed a 7,200 MW nuclear power project at Purnagadh in Ratnagiri district with an investment of ₹2 lakh crore. The company said the project could generate employment opportunities for more than one lakh people.
NTPC Limited has proposed a 7,200 MW nuclear facility at Devgad in Sindhudurg district with an investment of ₹1 lakh crore. The project is expected to create around 5,000 jobs.
Meanwhile, Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited plans to invest ₹2 lakh crore in projects aimed at producing 5,000 MW of electricity. The company is yet to finalise a project site.
Officials from the state energy department said the companies would now carry out detailed feasibility studies before moving ahead with final implementation plans.
Government push for clean energy expansion
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra aims to play a leading role in supporting India’s transition toward energy security and low-carbon power generation.
He said the state government would extend full support to companies investing in nuclear and clean energy projects, adding that the proposed investments would strengthen power generation capacity while creating substantial employment opportunities.
The Centre has also intensified its focus on nuclear energy expansion through the Nuclear Energy Mission announced in the 2025-26 Union Budget. The initiative includes support for Small Modular Reactors, or SMRs, which are compact nuclear reactors designed for scalable and flexible deployment.
Energy experts believe the latest agreements could accelerate private sector participation in India’s nuclear power sector and support the country’s long-term clean energy ambitions.
