Meta is stepping up its use of artificial intelligence to manage content moderation across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The company said it will gradually deploy more advanced AI models to handle a larger share of enforcement tasks, provided they outperform existing systems.
The shift marks a significant change in how Meta approaches content policing at scale. While human reviewers will remain involved, particularly in complex or sensitive cases, AI is expected to take over repetitive, high-volume tasks such as identifying harmful content, detecting scams, and monitoring suspicious account activity.
AI to drive efficiency and scale

The company claims its tools are now identifying significantly more instances of harmful content while reducing errors. By automating these processes, Meta aims to improve efficiency and respond more quickly to evolving online threats. The company believes AI offers greater scalability and adaptability, especially as malicious tactics become increasingly sophisticated.
At the same time, Meta plans to reduce its reliance on third-party moderation vendors, signalling a broader transition toward in-house, AI-driven systems. The move could reshape the economics and structure of content moderation across the industry.
Balancing innovation with regulatory pressure
The expanded use of AI comes amid ongoing scrutiny of social media platforms over safety, misinformation, and user protection. Meta has recently adjusted parts of its moderation strategy, including changes to fact-checking and content policies, drawing mixed reactions from regulators and advocacy groups.
In addition to moderation, Meta is introducing an AI-powered support assistant designed to provide round-the-clock help to users. The tool will be available across devices, offering quicker resolution of issues without relying solely on human support teams.
