Microsoft is not rolling out "Recall" with its new computers next week and will instead preview it with a smaller group later.
Recall is an AI-powered feature that tracks computer usage and tracks web browsing to voice chats, creating a history stored on the computer. Recall will now be available only for a preview on its Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks.
The feature sparked controversy because of the vast amount of data it would collect and store. Users worried it could be a privacy nightmare, with potential for misuse of personal information
Instead, Recall will be previewed with a smaller group later on. Recall is designed to track computer usage, web browsing, and voice chats, creating a history stored locally on the computer. This decision means that Recall will not be broadly available for Copilot+ PC users on June 18 as initially planned.
In a blog post, Microsoft explained that the decision is "rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure, and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users." The company emphasizes its dedication to ensuring the feature meets high standards of security and reliability before a wider release.
