Mozilla to Retire Pocket Bookmarking App on July 8 Amid Changing Web Habits
Mozilla has officially announced the shutdown of Pocket, its widely used bookmarking tool, marking the end of an era in online content curation. The service, which began its journey in 2007 under the name Read It Later, became a staple for millions of users wanting to save articles, videos, and webpages for later reading. Mozilla acquired the app in 2015, integrating it into its suite of tools aimed at improving digital content discovery and consumption.

The Pocket retirement is scheduled for July 8, 2025, with the company citing a significant shift in how people interact with content online. “The way people save and consume content on the web has evolved,” Mozilla stated in a blog post. As user behavior leans toward instant content consumption and alternative platforms, Mozilla is refocusing its efforts on technologies that better align with modern browsing patterns.

After the July 8 deadline, Pocket will enter an “export-only” mode until October 8, 2025. During this window, users will be able to download and save their Pocket data before it is permanently deleted. Additionally, Mozilla will automatically cancel active annual subscriptions and offer prorated refunds to users.

This decision reflects broader trends in digital media usage, where content curation tools must adapt or phase out amid the dominance of AI-driven recommendations and real-time consumption. While the Pocket shutdown may disappoint long-time users, Mozilla’s pivot signifies a deeper commitment to innovation in tune with today’s digital lifestyle.
