Elon Musk has denied a Reuters report stating that SpaceX is working on developing a Starlink smartphone in recent weeks. Reuters reported that SpaceX has been planning to develop such a phone "for years," and that entering the smartphone sector is one strategy being considered to help Starlink expand into new markets as SpaceX makes plans for an initial public offering (IPO).
Musk, however, accused the news outlet of lying and clarified that they are not working on any such smartphone currently.
That comment was enough to dismiss any kind of speculation made earlier that SpaceX might be entering the smartphone market.
SpaceX has also explored new services and filed trademarks related to mobile connectivity. These moves show that the company is thinking about the future of global communication, even if it is not building its own smartphone right now.
Musk has often spoken about long-term plans to offer broader cellular coverage from space, which could change how mobile networks work worldwide.
For now, the focus remains on improving Starlink’s satellite network and expanding coverage. The idea of a dedicated Starlink phone may still come up in the future, but there is no official development happening today. As satellite-to-phone technology improves, the need for a separate device may also become less important.
