NCERT to introduce AI syllabi for senior classes, expands AI projects for younger students
2025-12-23
In a move aligned with NEP 2020, NCERT will develop Artificial Intelligence textbooks for Classes 11–12, while AI-based projects will be included in Class 6 vocational education, aiming to build future-ready skills nationwide.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has set up a dedicated team to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) syllabi and textbooks for Classes 11 and 12. The initiative, confirmed by the Ministry of Education in Lok Sabha, is part of India’s broader effort to integrate AI and computational thinking into school education. This step follows the guidelines of NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, reinforcing the government’s focus on preparing students for future technological landscapes.
AI projects for younger learners and vocational education
Alongside senior classes, NCERT has incorporated an AI-focused project in the vocational education textbook for Class 6, specifically in Animation and Games, using AI tools. The government plans to introduce AI education from Class 3 onwards starting in the 2026–27 academic session. CBSE has already drafted a curriculum spanning Classes 3–12, introducing foundational AI concepts in lower grades and making advanced computational thinking compulsory for Classes 9 and 10.
SOAR initiative to promote AI literacy
To support this transformation, the Government of India has launched the SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) program, designed to enhance AI literacy among students and educators. Targeting Classes 6–12, the program includes three 15-hour micro-credential modules—AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, and AI to Aspire—totaling 45 hours. The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, ensure equitable access to AI education, and build a future-ready workforce across the country.
This comprehensive approach positions India to strengthen technological skills among young learners and integrate AI as a core component of school education.
