To support the public safety business in Asia Pacific, NEC Asia Pacific has established a regional competency centre for public safety solutions in Singapore. This is in line with the "One NEC" concept listed in the Mid-Term Growth Plan set by NEC Corporation, which seeks to establish a stronger global presence by organizing its subsidiaries by geographical regions, and creating more opportunities for cross-sharing of knowledge and expertise through regional competency centres in these regions.
The Asia Pacific region is expected to generate the greatest per cent of revenues for the biometrics industry, with more than 32% of global revenues by 2017, and market dominance for such solutions and services is anticipated to shift from Europe and the US to Asia.
Leveraging on NEC's fingerprint and facial recognition technologies, NEC APAC has been successful in implementing several of its public safety solutions in the Asia Pacific over the years, securing several multi-million dollar contracts for government agencies in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
Hence, in view of the growing demand for public safety solutions and services, NEC has announced the establishment of the regional competency centre for public safety (RCC-PS) in Singapore, to leverage on its expertise in this area to expand its existing capabilities and resources to develop the public safety businesses in Asia Pacific and support the NEC subsidiaries around the world. The RCC-PS will be spearheaded by Tan Boon Chin, Managing Director, RCC-PS, concurrently, Senior Vice-President for Government Solutions Business Unit at NEC APAC.
"Leveraging on NEC's avant-garde technologies in identity solutions, some of which are ranked as the world's most accurate systems, NEC is confident of delivering the best-of-breed solutions to our customers in this region, to enhance the safety and security of their countries or their businesses," added Tan Boon Chin, Managing Director, RCC-PS.
With effect from April 2010 (FY2010), NEC has plans to set up competency centres around the world, with each focussing on different technologies. NEC has since set up a cloud competency centre for telecom operators in Europe.
