Netflix to Drop Support for Older Fire TV Devices Starting June 2
While Netflix hasn’t issued an official explanation, experts attribute the move to newer streaming technologies like the AV1 codec, which older devices can’t handle.

Starting June 2, 2025, Netflix will officially end support for older Amazon Fire TV devices, including the first-generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick models, even those bundled with Alexa remotes. Amazon has already alerted affected users via email about the upcoming Netflix app update and the Fire TV update that will disable streaming on these legacy devices.

This Netflix streaming change comes as part of the industry’s shift toward advanced video codecs such as AV1, which deliver higher-quality video at lower bandwidth. However, older Fire TV devices, launched in 2014, lack the processing power and software support necessary to handle these new technologies. The devices also no longer receive essential software or security updates, making continued Netflix compatibility technically impossible.

Users of these older Fire TV models will find the Netflix app unusable after the June 2 update, with no available workaround to restore functionality. This development signals a broader push by streaming services like Netflix to phase out legacy hardware that cannot keep up with evolving streaming standards.

For consumers still using these devices, upgrading to newer Fire TV models will be necessary to continue enjoying seamless Netflix streaming and the latest app features. The change underscores the importance of keeping streaming hardware updated to support modern apps and technologies.
