With about 228,000 employees worldwide, Microsoft employs around 20,000 people in India, making it a major player in the country’s IT sector
Amid global reports of Microsoft layoffs affecting a small percentage of its workforce, Microsoft has confirmed that it will not be laying off employees in its India operations. Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, reassured stakeholders, stating that the company is not considering any job cuts in India. “No, not in India,” Chandok affirmed when asked about the global workforce reductions. “We are engaged in numerous projects, and in fact, more tech industry jobs are being created in India,” he added.
Reports had indicated that Microsoft is trimming less than 1% of its global workforce due to performance-based evaluations. With about 228,000 employees worldwide, Microsoft employs around 20,000 people in India, making it a major player in the country’s IT sector.
The Microsoft layoffs update marks a smaller scale of downsizing compared to previous rounds. In 2023, Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees, and in early 2024, its gaming division eliminated 1,900 roles following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Taking India IT sector to the next level
The timing of these reports coincides with the recent two-day visit of Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, to India, during which he unveiled a significant $3 billion investment plan to bolster the company’s cloud and AI infrastructure over the next two years.
Nadella emphasized India’s growing importance in the Indian economy, particularly in AI innovation. He described India as rapidly becoming a global leader in the field, unlocking new opportunities across sectors. He reaffirmed Microsoft’s commitment to making India an AI-first nation by investing in infrastructure, skills development, and fostering AI-driven transformations.
To further support this mission, Microsoft has teamed up with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the IndiaAI Mission, and partnered with several key companies like RailTel, Apollo Hospitals, and Bajaj Finserv. Chandok concluded by stating that Microsoft India is committed to driving AI innovations that benefit India’s IT sector and ensure access to cutting-edge technologies for communities nationwide.
