Nokia Siemens to shut fixed-line factory in Kolkata
As part of a major global restructuring to focus on more profitable operations, the telecom equipment maker, Nokia Siemens is planning to close down its fixed-line manufacturing facility in Kolkata from July 31.
According to a spokesperson from Nokia Siemens Network, "The manufacturing facility at Salt Lake catered to fixed-line telephony and decline in demand, refocus of company strategy towards mobile broadband and unprofitability of fixed line telephony products accounted for the closure."
As a result of the factory closer, nearly 48 employees, who had not opted for voluntary retirement schemes or could not be offered any alternate opportunity. They will have to lose their jobs. Presently, a total of 65 employees are working in NSN's Kolkata factory.
However, NSN spokesperson also said that the company remains committed to West Bengal, which has employee strength of around 700 presently. NSN support large telecom operators in West Bengal.
