Nvidia is reportedly discussing a major investment in Perplexity as part of a new equity round that could value the AI search and agent startup at more than $30 billion, over 50% above its previous reported $20 billion valuation. The discussions have not yet been confirmed as a completed transaction.

The potential investment reflects Perplexity’s rapid commercial expansion. Its annualized revenue has reportedly climbed from less than $250 million at the beginning of 2026 to more than $750 million, helped partly by Perplexity Computer, its cloud-based AI agent for automating professional tasks.

For Nvidia, however, the strategic significance extends well beyond financial returns. Jensen Huang is increasingly positioning Nvidia across the entire AI value chain—chips, networking, data centers, models, software, agents and applications.

Backing Perplexity would give Nvidia greater exposure to the application layer where consumers and enterprises actually use AI. Every expansion of AI search, reasoning and autonomous agents ultimately increases demand for inference compute—the infrastructure where Nvidia remains exceptionally strong.

There is also an important ecosystem effect. Nvidia increasingly invests in companies that themselves require enormous computing resources. Supporting successful AI platforms can therefore stimulate the broader market for the GPUs, networking systems and software Nvidia sells.

The strategy illustrates a major structural change in the AI industry. Chip companies are becoming software and model players, cloud providers are designing chips, and AI companies are building agents and infrastructure. Traditional boundaries between semiconductor, cloud and software businesses are disappearing.

For Perplexity, Nvidia’s backing could provide capital, infrastructure relationships and strategic credibility as competition intensifies with Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI platforms. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has also said the company intends to pursue an IPO by 2028.

The bigger story is therefore not simply Nvidia investing in another AI startup. Nvidia is building an ecosystem in which growth at almost every layer of AI can potentially generate greater demand for computing. Jensen Huang’s strategy is evolving from selling the engines of the AI revolution to investing across the industries those engines are creating.
