OpenAI has unveiled a fresh set of initiatives to curb the spread of AI-driven misinformation and strengthen voter access to trustworthy election information. The ChatGPT maker announced that it is partnering with US-based civic technology organisation Democracy Works to provide users with authoritative information on voter registration, polling locations and election procedures whenever such queries are raised through its platforms. OpenAI is also collaborating with The Associated Press to offer real-time election results during upcoming polls in the US and Brazil.
The move comes as artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of modern election campaigns. Political candidates around the world are adopting AI-powered tools for outreach and communication, while voters are turning to chatbots for information about candidates, policies and voting procedures. This growing reliance has heightened concerns over the potential misuse of generative AI to manipulate public opinion or spread false narratives during election cycles.
To strengthen election security, OpenAI said it is extending access to cybersecurity tools to election administrators across the US. Registered voting system manufacturers are also being included in the company’s Trusted Access for Cyber programme.
In addition, OpenAI has briefed key election management bodies, including associations representing state election officials, on the latest cyber capabilities of its AI models.
A major focus of the company’s latest strategy will be to tackle AI-generated deepfakes. OpenAI said it is investing in content provenance technologies that allow users to determine whether images or videos were created or altered using AI tools.
