With the increase in demand and infrastructure costs, OpenAI is indicating a shift in how it prices ChatGPT, with “unlimited” AI plans likely to face changes. Executives at the company say pricing will need to evolve alongside rapid advances in AI systems.
ChatGPT currently operates on a mix of free and paid tiers. OpenAI is now exploring ways to better align pricing with usage that could include metered billing, tiered usage limits, or hybrid models hat balance access with cost recovery.
The company is also testing alternative approaches such as advertising to expand access for users who may not subscribe to paid plans.
The shift reflects a broader trend across the AI industry. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has spoken about pricing AI tools per agent rather than per user. Other companies such as Google and Anthropic already use usage-based pricing for many AI services.
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, said there is “no world” where pricing remains unchanged as the technology continues to develop. The comments highlight growing pressure on existing subscription models.
At present, the free version includes usage limits, while paid plans such as Plus cost $20 per month and Pro costs $200 per month, offering higher limits and additional features. Turley said subscriptions were introduced as a way to manage demand when ChatGPT usage surged after launch. He described the current model as a response to capacity constraints rather than a long-term pricing strategy.
