The new Agentic Payments pilot lets users complete purchases within ChatGPT using Razorpay and NPCI’s UPI, enabling secure, AI-driven shopping with partners like Bigbasket, while offering real-time tracking, instant cancellations, and full user control
In a ground-breaking collaboration, Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have launched a pilot program to integrate Agentic Payments within ChatGPT, aiming to revolutionize how consumers shop and pay digitally in India. This initiative enables users to complete secure financial transactions seamlessly within conversational AI platforms, marking a significant step forward in India’s move toward intelligent, frictionless payments.
Seamless shopping and payments in conversational AI
As conversational AI tools like ChatGPT become integral to consumer decision-making, the new Agentic Payments feature allows users to complete purchases without leaving the chat interface. Powered by Razorpay’s payment infrastructure and NPCI’s robust Unified Payments Interface (UPI)—which processes over 20 billion transactions monthly—the pilot enables AI-native shopping experiences supported by banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank.
Bigbasket, a Tata Group company, is among the first merchants participating in this program. Users can request ChatGPT to order groceries, such as “ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry,” and the AI fetches relevant products, presents choices, and processes payments securely via Razorpay—all within a conversational flow. Users maintain full control with real-time tracking, instant cancellation, and secure authentication, ensuring transparency and trust throughout the transaction.
Paving the way for AI-driven commerce in India
This partnership explores the future of AI-assisted payments by allowing intelligent agents to execute transactions while respecting user consent and data privacy. The goal is to scale these capabilities across sectors and establish AI-led commerce powered by UPI at a national level.
Harshil Mathur, CEO of Razorpay, highlighted the transformative potential: “Agentic Payments turns AI assistants into complete shopping agents, bringing India’s own UPI-integrated conversational payment experience to millions.”
NPCI’s Sohini Rajola emphasized the innovation’s inclusiveness and ease, while OpenAI’s Oliver Jay expressed enthusiasm about combining advanced AI with India’s trusted payment network to create effortless commerce.
