RIM debuts BlackBerry PlayBook

Finally, the wait is over with Research in Motion (RIM) launching three models of its tablet PC, the BlackBerry PlayBook, in India. The models are priced Rs.37,990, Rs.32,990  and Rs. 27,990 for 64GB, 32GB and 16GB modes respectively. Placing this on par with BlackBerry's enterprise offerings, the company's managing director in India, Frenny Bawa, called it a workaholic device. "It is the first enterprise-ready tablet to hit the market," she said at a press conference during the launch.

The company also said the device, just like its smartphones, offered secure connectivity on its server. With a seven-inch screen and a weight of 425 grams, the company is branding it as a pocket device. "The device is more portable than others," said Bawa.

The device does not allow one to use a data SIM card. One would have to use either a Wi-Fi connection or sync it with a BlackBerry smartphone. "Tablet market shipments show a clear preference for the 10-inch model, due to its ability to support more-robust two-hand typing and larger viewing areas for apps, especially videos," said Vishal Tripathi, Principal Analyst, Gartner.
