Samsung is reportedly testing deeper integration of the Perplexity AI assistant on Galaxy devices, including a dedicated voice command. The feature, if rolled out, could debut with future Galaxy models and upcoming One UI updates.
Samsung may be exploring a new way for users to interact with artificial intelligence on its Galaxy smartphones. Industry reports indicate the company is working on adding Perplexity as an AI assistant on select Galaxy devices, potentially supported by a custom voice trigger such as “Hey Plex.” If implemented, the feature would allow users to summon the assistant hands-free, similar to existing wake words used by other AI services on Android.
Evidence of this development has emerged from a recent analysis of the Perplexity app’s Android code. The review identified references suggesting built-in support for hotword activation, including the ability to trigger the assistant even when the device screen is turned off. These findings point to a more seamless, always-available AI experience on compatible Samsung smartphones.
How the feature could work
According to the code references, users would need to opt in to voice data collection and complete a brief setup process, including recording a voice sample so the system can recognise the speaker. The assistant may also allow users to delete and re-record their voice data if needed. Access to the device’s microphone would be required for the feature to function.
The code further suggests that the hotword may only work through the phone’s built-in microphones. If external accessories such as Bluetooth earphones are connected, users could be prompted to disconnect them, indicating reliance on internal hardware for accurate wake word detection. Additional system-level services tied to Samsung devices hint at integration with the company’s existing voice activation framework.
Possible launch timeline
There are also signs that Perplexity could come preinstalled on certain future Galaxy models. Reports suggest the integration may arrive with the One UI 8.5 software update, which is expected to debut alongside the Galaxy S26 series early next year. If confirmed, this would mark Perplexity’s first deep, system-level integration on Samsung smartphones, offering users a new voice-driven approach to accessing AI features.
