As Earth’s orbit becomes increasingly crowded with satellites and space debris, SpaceX has unveiled a new initiative aimed at improving safety and sustainability in space operations. Called Stargaze, the system is SpaceX’s latest move to strengthen Space Situational Awareness (SSA) across the global space community.
Space situational awareness refers to a sophisticated network of sensors, data systems and analytical software used to track objects orbiting the Earth. The goal is to monitor their movement accurately to prevent collisions and ensure the long-term safety of orbital operations.
In a move that highlights the growing necessity for transparency in an increasingly crowded low-Earth orbit, SpaceX's Starlink announced it will provide Stargaze conjunction data to all satellite operators entirely free of charge. The initiative is designed to foster a culture of cooperation amongst global space players.
By sharing precise ephemeris data, which provides information on the positions of celestial objects, SpaceX hopes to incentivize other operators to adopt similar open communication standards.
The system also provides conjunction screening services.
These are specialized aerospace safety services that analyse the future positions of satellites and other Resident Space Objects to identify potential close approaches. This collective approach to safe flight is essential as the number of active satellites continues to climb, raising the risk of orbital collisions that could jeopardise future exploration.
