The messaging platform is preparing an update that will introduce dedicated chat lists for archived, locked and third-party conversations, helping users organise messages more efficiently and access important chats with greater ease.
WhatsApp is working on a new set of chat management features aimed at helping users better organise their conversations within the app. The upcoming update is expected to expand the platform’s chat list functionality by introducing additional preset filters that automatically categorise conversations based on specific criteria.
The feature remains under development and has not yet been released to beta testers. However, it signals WhatsApp’s continued focus on improving navigation and reducing clutter for users who manage a large number of personal and professional conversations.
The planned enhancements build on WhatsApp’s existing chat list system, which allows users to create customised categories and organise conversations according to their preferences.
Enhanced organisation through chat lists
Currently, users can pin selected chat lists to the top of the Chats tab for quick access, while less frequently used lists can be viewed through a dedicated “More” section. This arrangement helps maintain a cleaner interface without sacrificing accessibility.
WhatsApp also allows users to create custom lists for specific groups of contacts, such as family members, colleagues, clients, or friends. In addition, the platform offers built-in filters that automatically sort conversations into categories such as unread messages, groups, communities, and favourites.
The forthcoming update is expected to expand these capabilities by adding new preset filters for archived chats, locked conversations, and third-party chats. The goal is to make it easier for users to locate specific conversations without manually creating additional categories.
Dedicated space for locked chats
One of the most notable additions under development is a dedicated filter for locked chats. These conversations are protected through device-level security features such as fingerprint authentication, facial recognition, or passcodes, offering users an extra layer of privacy.
At present, locked chats are displayed in a separate section at the top of the Chats tab. Under the proposed update, WhatsApp is expected to replace this arrangement with a dedicated chat list, integrating the feature more seamlessly into the broader conversation management system.
The update reflects WhatsApp’s broader efforts to refine the user experience as messaging habits become increasingly complex. By providing more structured ways to organise conversations, the platform aims to help users manage growing volumes of messages while maintaining quick access to important and private chats.
While no official release timeline has been announced, the feature is expected to arrive in a future update once development and testing are completed.
