The Meta-owned platform has introduced a broad set of updates designed to enhance calling, messaging and media creation. The changes include Missed Call Messages, upgraded Meta AI image tools, improved video call layouts and richer Status and Channel interactions.
WhatsApp has announced a significant feature refresh as the holiday season approaches, introducing new tools across calling, messaging and AI-powered content creation. The Meta-owned platform said the updates are aimed at making communication more seamless, expressive and intuitive for its global user base.
Missed Call Messages, improved calls and new reactions
The biggest addition is Missed Call Messages, a feature that allows callers to instantly record a short voice or video note when the recipient does not answer. Positioned as a modern alternative to traditional voicemail, the tool enables users to leave quick updates “with a single tap” without needing to redial or compose a separate message.
WhatsApp is also enhancing the experience during voice chats, letting users send reactions—such as celebratory animations—without interrupting the ongoing conversation. For video calls, the app will now automatically highlight the active speaker, making group calls easier to follow.
Meta AI gets upgraded image generation and animation
A major set of improvements has also arrived for Meta AI image creation inside WhatsApp. The messaging service says it has integrated capabilities from newer generation models, resulting in noticeably better image quality and faster output for tasks like creating festive cards or personalised greetings.
Meta AI can now also animate still photos into short video clips, based on user prompts. This feature allows users to bring ordinary images to life by generating simple animated sequences directly within the chat interface.
Enhanced media organisation, Status updates and Channel engagement
On desktop, WhatsApp is introducing a new media tab, enabling faster sorting of documents, links and shared media across conversations. Link previews have also been redesigned for clearer visibility.
Status updates are becoming more interactive, with new music lyric overlays, animated stickers and question prompts. Channels are receiving upgrades too, allowing creators and organisations to collect responses in real time and engage followers more effectively.
