The new subscription tier introduces advanced customisation tools, premium stickers, expanded chat pinning, and personalised themes as WhatsApp explores new monetisation opportunities while keeping core messaging services free for users.
WhatsApp has started introducing a new premium subscription service called “WhatsApp Plus,” aimed at users seeking additional personalisation and enhanced interface controls within the messaging platform.
The optional paid plan adds a range of cosmetic upgrades and convenience-focused features without altering WhatsApp’s core communication services. Messaging, voice calls, video calls, status updates, and end-to-end encryption will continue to remain free for all users.
According to reports, the feature is currently being rolled out to a limited group of Android and iPhone users following earlier beta testing phases. Initial availability appears to be restricted to select regions, including parts of Europe and Mexico.
The subscription marks one of WhatsApp’s latest efforts to diversify revenue streams while preserving its traditional ad-free messaging experience.
Focus on themes, stickers and chat personalisation
One of the major additions under WhatsApp Plus is expanded interface customisation. Subscribers reportedly gain access to multiple accent colour options that replace WhatsApp’s default green design across the application.
The premium plan also introduces alternative app icons featuring different visual styles, allowing users to personalise the appearance of the application on their devices.
In addition, WhatsApp Plus includes exclusive animated sticker packs and enhanced chat management features. Users subscribing to the service can pin up to 20 chats simultaneously, a significant increase from the three-chat limit available to standard users.
The platform is also reportedly adding personalised ringtone settings for selected contacts, along with bulk customisation tools that allow users to apply themes and notification preferences across multiple chats at once.
Limited rollout and subscription pricing
Reports suggest the subscription currently costs around €2.49 per month in certain European markets, while users in Mexico may see pricing near MXN 29 monthly. The company is also said to be testing limited-time free trial offers for some users.
At present, the rollout is reportedly restricted to a small number of users running the latest version of the app through official app stores. Wider global availability is expected gradually over the coming weeks and months.
The subscription automatically renews every month unless cancelled manually before the next billing cycle. Users can manage renewals through their respective app store subscription settings.
Industry observers believe the launch of WhatsApp Plus reflects a broader trend among messaging platforms to introduce optional premium experiences centred on customisation, productivity, and user engagement without restricting access to essential communication features.
