WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could significantly reshape how users manage their conversations. The upcoming functionality, reportedly called “After Reading,” is designed to automatically delete messages after they have been viewed by the recipient—offering a more dynamic approach to privacy and control.

Once introduced, it will allow users to decide how long a message remains visible after it has been opened, rather than simply existing indefinitely in chat threads.

WhatsApp already offers disappearing messages, which automatically delete chats after a fixed duration such as 24 hours or several days. However, that system operates independently of when a message is actually read.
